Bella Dreaming

We had a wonderful week of learning about Marc Chagall in my Let’s Face It 2018 class. Ivy Newport gave us a nice review of Chagall’s life and art, and some lessons on how to paint while being influenced by his style.  I went and did some research on my own, trying to decide how best to reflect his style with my own.

I have to say, that I had seen the painting of his in the Opera House in Paris in 2006, and I wasn’t impressed. I think I was expecting something a bit more opulent, than his dreamlike characters. They didn’t seem to fit the surroundings.

It wasn’t until I started painting about two years later, that I started to see his work with a different eye. And I started to appreciate his life and struggles more, and how he put beauty and imagination into his world of art making.

My nod to Chagall, using some of his favorite color combinations, and his love of music, and for his wife, Bella…who was his great love. I really like how this portrait evolved into what it is now. I listened to Mozart as I painted this one, much like Chagall used to do, when he painted. It is noted that he liked to listen to Bach as well. I usually listen to music when I paint, but not always classical. But I do love Mozart, so it was a joy to listen and paint this.

Bella Dreaming is now available in my Etsy shop, ArtcyLucy.
