Hello!

It’s November! And the weather is finally starting to cool down here. We even had a little rain this past week, we need it so badly! I took a bit of a blog break through September and October. During that time, I did some art experimenting, and worked a bit in the garden too.  Our dahlias were slow to bloom because of the drought and heat, but they are so beautiful now!

I also changed around my online shop, ArtcyLucyShop.com which really reflects the art I am doing now, which is almost entirely abstract painting. There is something I find so fascinating, about not working with a subject. I pursued portrait painting almost exclusively for 11 years, with the occasional detour into waterlilies, landscapes, clay work, and a few abstracts too. But mostly, I loved painting faces. And while I still find portraits so interesting to look at, my heart has really been tugging me towards abstracts more and more.

Lately, when I have been sharing my abstract pieces, I get variations of this kind of reaction, “Great color palette, and the paintings are vibrant and full of energy.” Also words like, “bright”, “beautiful” and “joyful” come up, and that makes me happy! Working in bright bold colors, with a bit of drama, does bring me joy.

But I also get another reaction from others, that they don’t “get” abstracts. And I understand that reaction too, because there is no subject in most intuitive abstracts, and our brains are always looking at things to make sense of them. While the work that I am doing now, is not recognizable as a subject we are familiar with, I find it really enjoyable to take a feeling, an emotion, a color, a song, a word, or the joy I get from being in a garden, and translate that onto a canvas or wood panel, or paper, in bright color and energetic brushstrokes. I find working this way so fascinating. So, the walls in my home, have very few portraits on display, and more bold, bright, and colorful abstract paintings. Gazing at them, brings me joy.
