Dreaming of You – 6 x 6 inch acrylic painting on Ampersand Gessobord Available in my Etsy art shop, ArtcyLucy Studio

I started off this year in a class called, The Art of Hands. I have loved this class, and have been studying artists of the past and present who loved to include hands in their portraits. I especially loved the ones that exaggerated and elongated their hands, much like Modigliani liked to elongate the necks of his painted beauties.

A few of the artists I am learning from are…

Jeanne-Marie Webb, she is the teacher of this class. I love how graceful her hands in her portraits are.  Her pieces are tender and beautiful. She is also the teacher for my Tiny Bags of Love class, she taught me how to paint on tea bags last year.

Oswaldo Guayasmin – he was a painter that dealt with some serious trauma as a child, a time of civil unrest and violence, and his heart wrenching and emotional portraits are raw and sometimes uncomfortable to look at. Yet, there is something quite tender in the way he uses hands in his portraits.

Olivia Pendergast – she has done quite a few portraits of people in Malawi, quite beautiful, and with elongated limbs.

I am enjoying this new love of drawing and painting hands, and you will see them show up in my new work for this year.
