Dubrovnik Harbour

My niece and her husband have a love of travel, much like my husband and I do. They just returned from their anniversary trip to Eastern Europe, and I was able to virtually travel along with them via Instagram. I wanted to make a special painting for them, something that would remind them of this adventure…and so from one of their IG photos, I painted this…

Dubrovnik Harbour (yes, with the European spelling, just for fun)

12 x 12 inch acrylic on stretched canvas

I took some liberties with the colors and the proportion, and decided to have a little fun with this. I love the shapes that repeat throughout the piece and I exaggerated them a bit… the curve of the pavement, the curves of the boats, the curves of the arches, the curve of the hill, the the swirling curves in the sky. I loved punching up the colors in the water, and I layered quite a bit.

This painting was very happily received, and is now in their home. Just goes to show you, any image, whether seen in person, in a photograph, no matter how big or small, can inspire you to create a work of art. Every landscape I do, teaches me something more…and I get a little more confidence to try new things. Also, painting scenes like this…makes me want to travel again!
