Jacqueline – 5 x 7 inch acrylic on Ampersand Claybord   (SOLD, thank you!)

Yes, I am back to portraits…after weeks of still life paintings, and landscapes. It always feels good to go back to faces…I feel that I can get a little crazy with color and style, when I do a portrait. I am using a technique I learned earlier this year…layering and scribbling into the paint. I love how the colors underneath show through. It makes an otherwise “serious” portrait, just a bit more playful and fun. I like that unexpected element.

Also, I am using a new substrate this week…this is my first time using Ampersand Claybord. Compared to their Gessobord (which I love using), it is smoother. But it is a great surface to paint on…not too slick, not too textured. These are hard panels and they are archival, and are very well made. I can see myself painting on this surface in the future. I love it so much better than canvas.
