Esme – 5 x 7 inch gouache painting on Ampersand Gessobord
This is the last of the three Matisse inspired paintings from last week. This one was the difficult one…I had to really work with her, to get it just right. This is where working in gouache came in handy…as I could wipe off with water and a rag, the part I didn’t like, and start from the under layers. I took the advice of one of my favorite teachers, “work on a painting until you love it”. She also taught us the value of layering. The newest online class with that teacher, Misty Mawn, starts on Monday, and I can’t wait to get started! Her passion for art, and her clear and encouraging instructions, makes her online classes so very special. She is one of my favorite contemporary artists. Which just goes to show, how much I enjoy learning from artists of the past, as well as the present!
Hi Sarah, and thank you for the very kind comment! I am glad you noticed the geometric shapes…I am trying to spend a bit more time on the backgrounds. It does really add to the portraits, I think.
Thanks so much for your comment, Cindy! Yes, this isn’t quite the style I’m used to, so it does feel good to get a bit more dynamic in my art. I think this Studying Under the Masters class, is helping!
She is fabulous! I love the geometric shapes in the background – they really contrast nicely with the flowers in her hair.
