I am always excited to try painting on different surfaces. So, when I was asked to “alter” a puzzle piece for an art collaboration with my local art group, I jumped at the chance to try something new. I thought that the shape of the pieces would be a challenge, but actually, it wasn’t a challenge at all. To me, it adds an interesting element to the painting.

This piece, “Afternoon Stroll” was literally done in an hour and a half. It had to be done quickly, because I had to turn it in to the art group the very next day. I used a very fast drying medium, gouache. This puzzle piece is approximately 5 inches in height, and 9 inches in width. So, we aren’t talking tiny jigsaw puzzle pieces…thankfully!

“Blue Eyed Girl” is approximately 9 inches high and 8 inches wide. I gessoed the puzzle piece first, and then painted this quick portrait with acrylics. I had a hard time giving up this piece for the art collaboration…I loved this portrait so much! I think the whimsical nature of the background makes it interesting and fun. I really loved painting on this surface, and now, I am on the lookout for extra large puzzle pieces…so I can continue this painting fun!
